Sacred groves, centuries-old festivals, and craft traditions that have never stopped — Ile-Ife's culture isn't preserved behind glass, it's lived every day.
Ile-Ife's festival calendar marks the town's spiritual and agricultural year, drawing visitors from across Yorubaland and the diaspora.
Olojo is Ile-Ife's most significant royal festival, held in honour of Ogun, the deity of iron. During the festival, the Ooni dons the sacred Are crown — believed to carry the spiritual authority passed down from Oduduwa himself — and steps out to bless the land and its people. It is one of the few times each year the crown leaves the palace, drawing indigenes and visitors from around the world to witness it.
The Edi Festival commemorates the legend of Moremi Ajasoro, the queen celebrated for her courage in saving Ile-Ife from invasion by sacrificing her own comfort and, by tradition, her only son. The festival is a period of cleansing and thanksgiving — women take a central role in its observance, honouring Moremi's sacrifice with processions, songs, and rites passed down through generations.
Yoruba tradition holds Ile-Ife as the birthplace of the world and Oduduwa (also called Oodua) as the progenitor of the Yoruba people. From this ground, tradition says, Oduduwa's descendants went on to found the great kingdoms of Yorubaland — Oyo, Benin, Ketu, and beyond — each tracing its royal lineage back to Ife. The Oduduwa Monument stands today as a tribute to this founding history, a site every Yoruba descendant is encouraged to visit at least once.
The Ooni of Ife holds one of the most revered thrones in Yorubaland, regarded as a direct spiritual descendant of Oduduwa and custodian of Ife's sacred traditions. Since his ascension to the throne in December 2015, the reigning Ooni has become known for combining deep custodianship of culture with an active push for Ile-Ife's modern development — championing tourism, youth empowerment, and global outreach to the Yoruba diaspora alongside his traditional religious and ceremonial duties.
The Ife Development Board works closely with the Palace on major initiatives, ensuring that every development effort is undertaken with the blessing and guidance of the throne.
